Log18 Aug 7 - Worst day of the journey
We may never eat lobster again.
A lobster trap finally got us.
We had successfully avoided thousands of traps, especially in Jericho Bay, but we were in Winter Harbor in Vinalhaven, preparing to head out to Monhegan. While we were raising anchor, a trap was hidden under the boat and when we put the engine in gear, the trap line wrapped around the prop and the shaft so badly the it stopped the engine.
We re-anchored quickly and I had to dive on the prop. After more than an hour of free-diving and cutting, hacking, and unwrapping, I got the prop and shaft clear and clean. The engine started fine, but when in gear, it really sounded bad. So, we moved only a little further out and anchored in Seal Bay.
All of the pictures in this gallery are from Seal Bay, because during the disaster, my mind was too preoccupied to think of my camera or even the GoPro. Too bad. I wish I had a picture of the rats nest under my boat.
Once anchored in Seal Bay, I started calling boatyards to get everything checked out. Wayfarer Marine in Camden could see us the soonest, so we made an appointment.
We went to bed thinking we would sail over there the next morning.
