Log30 Aug 19 Fort Knox (in Maine)
Anyway, the fort is amazing. If you ever come up this way, you should stop here and take a half day tour of Ft. Know.
After the visit to the fort, we rode the elevator up to the Penobscot Obseratory tower. This was also fun, but a clearer day would truly be amazing. Basically, one of the support towers for the bridge had an observatory at the top so you can see the Penobscot River and the surrounding area. Beautiful.
From there we went across the river to the village of Bucksport for lunch. Quaint town, but not much for restaurants. The view of the fort was impressive.

The fort was surrounded by a dry moat called the "ditch". The ditch was lined on both sides with walls and tunnel systems within which shooters could pick off enemy soldiers who climed the first wall and landed in the ditch.
At one point, the fort had over 200 cannons.
